My ankle is still destroyed. Went to the doctor and am going to see a specialist on Monday. Might have a high ankle sprain/ separated tendon from the bone. Adversity builds character.

the first doc told me I had a high ankle sprain and " may never run again", four days later a specialist told me that I could run now, until it hurt…

I finally felt normal enough to go out and run today. I’m grateful for what I was able to do.  It was 8 min plus pace which is sad to me, but there’s so much tightness still in my ankle its all that I could do. Hopefully ill be working on my base soon.

6 miles today and I felt very tight and sore, amazing really how much a body can change in two weeks. The good news is that it was easy, and easily under 8 minute pace for the whole run. Still need about 2 weeks I imagine to get the ankle back to the realm of normal. Ill try and figure out how to appropriately ramp up milage for my base and plans to periodize this year.

In seattle now, at sea level obviously. I should be running 7 min pace pretty easy here, but my ankle has set me back way more than I had anticipated. Its okay, I am just happy to run but my speed has been no bueno at all. I run from downtown over to the peir. Good stuff. 7:50 pace

my fitness is back to a place where i can finally build a base. my plan is to increase by 10 miles per week and get to 70, so that i can have at least 12 weeks at 70 MPW before my june marathon.

AM:One month and one day after destroying my ankle in Salt Lake I am at 90% and ran my first 10 miler since that day.10 miles at 3000 feet, 7:35 pace. I can tell my strength is much less than it was a month ago, but I have total confidence that i can run sub 3 hours in the marathon and about 37:50  in the 10K within my next training cycle.

PM: 4.75 miles at sub 7 minute pace. I wanted to run again, so I did. I'm always amazed how after a very hard/ race morning that I am able to run my fastest that night. I need to focus more on warmups prior to long workouts and races I guess.

same 10 mile loop as yesterday, 7:30 pace for first 7 miles and then 7:40 for 8 and slowed to the speed of a moped with a loose wheel up the huge hill to my house the last 2 miles, maybe 8:55. I am a really strong hill runner typically, but I got even more brutalized than yesterday. I'll try to top of my milage at 40 this week, build to 45-50 next week and maintain 50 through February. In march or april start doing 70 miles a week plan on getting up to 85-100 miles prior to my late spring/ early summer marathon.

Sasha was right. 10 miles every day with 20 on the weekend is the way to get in really good shape for a marathon. 10 miles through the streets to the waterfront of seattle today. Running that far in this city is like an urban challenge, avoiding cop cars on the elliot bay river trail, closed sidewalks and ferry crossing masses. I felt really strong early. Effortless 7:15 pace. I maintained 7:30 pace the entire way even when i started feeling it in my legs. It was a great day of running.

I felt strong today. I'm back at 3000 feet of altitude and I ran 10 miles over some pretty sketchy areas, more hills and dirt than Seattle and I still maintained a 7:35 average over 10 miles. Spent a mile trying to catch some guy i saw running ahead of me, caught up to him and he asked to run with me. Really nice guy, he did the Xtrerra in Hawaii and some stuff around Washington. We ran a mile in about 6:59 and then he split to head home. I wanted to run another 10 tonight, and I could have but a nap ended my bid to get out before the fading light. I am going to be very fit for my spring races, especially once I break into 50,70 and just for fun 100 miles a week.

felt really stiff, laggy the first 4 miles in my lower legs/achiles. when i got to about 6 I started feeling much better. I have a little cold and i can feel it in the back of my throat and my body so that was also there. Then there was the unexpected trip to narnia at a starbucks in downtown Seattle for a few minutes. Not ideal haha. However,  The last mile and a half i felt amazing and it was all clicking really well.

Started out feeling strong. (I note this because in past months of training the first few minutes I have felt sluggish or tired exc sometimes)

A train interrupted my first mile, to quote Ariadne " This wasn't in the design"  ANYways, felt good through even like 7 miles. Kept about 7:15 pace. had some good miles but my knees kinda started aching and I could kinda feel my form start to get a little shaky. I ended up probably trying a little to hard to hold onto sub 7:20 pace the last couple miles. 8-9.5 were something like 7:45 each. I need to probably start wearing the kayanos more in training than the trainers.

The weather in Seattle finally came back with a vengeance. I suffered the worst shin splints of my life this morning pretty much right away. I had to call it in the morning and get in the rest of my milage at night. Sasha says its okay if you sometimes split up 10 mile aerobic building runs... so I don't feel too bad, STILL I don't run as fast on the treadmill and I kind of feel like its cheating even though I put it on 1% incline.

The treadmill never got used since yesterday, so my 10 miles from then were still on it. The calorie counter ( inaccurate) went to 999 and re set three times in two days haha, and the clock went to 90:00 and rolled back to zero again. I beat the treadmill, or at least this sketchy hotel one haha

The first half marathon I have run since TOU 2009, (which was a disaster).

I was fairly nervous about this distance, but my expectations were that I could run 1:26-1:29.

Lets be brief shall we?

I started out BAD. Real bad. I ran a good 6:47 first mile, but it hurt my outer calves and quads bad. My splits show it, 6:59 second mile, 6:56 third, 6:57 fourth, and finally the culminating awful 7:05 mile. wow, suckkssss.

Then I relized something... The soreness was decreasing. My breathing was not labored and I did not have anaerobic burn in my hamstrings or calves. I just screwed up bad by not getting a proper warmup. If anyone wants to give me advice on appropriate warmups, please, I am all ears.

Then the turnaround, and I understood that it was going to be okay. I could hopefully run some pretty heavy negative splits, turns out I was right.

last 7 miles were

 6:26, 6:33, 6:39, 6:23, 6:26, 6:25, 6:15

So, ended in 1:26:54. I pulled in my old High School science teacher the last 4 miles which was part of the reason I did as good as I did. I'm happy with this. I may sign up for  the Salt Lake Marathon just so I can get my BQ out of the way this year. I should be in 2:55-2:59 shape in a month or so.

AM: DEATH MARCH

So I'm getting 150+ grams of protein a day but evidently that 13 mile tempo run last saturday is still in the legs. Because after 15 yesterday I barely survived this morning. runners of the week are Jordan Hasay,  who after getting beat two times by Sheila Reid throws down the double winning the 3k and mile. She is so fun to watch run. Then Miles Batty, what a champ. Lost all the weight from his mission and is shreding everyone.

7 miles in the morning.. I'll take it. My calorie deficit right now is somewhere between maybe 200-500. Very hard to keep accurate counts of consumed and burned.

4 X 400 1:12-1:19. Not great, but at least I was moving faster than I have in a lonnngg time. I think I'll run 1:26 or better in the striders half.

12 miles through the desert trails outside zion national park. It was amazing but my trail running skills are essentially akin to me running down the train tracks towards inevitable injury.  i land so hard. I messed up my ankle on this run forsure, so i need to change some things up. After messing up my ankles 4 miles out, I ran back and it started feeling better. I then got lost, but I knew I was close to the car so I didn't worry to much, ended up going 12 total. then I soaked in the Virgin river, which really really helped the stiffness I have been having in my right calf.

5 miles on our treadmill that won't go lower than 1.5 incline. Its epic. It was too much so i just got off and ran outside in the snow and I felt amazingly strong for 5.I don't know, probably the low milage last week and the Virgin river soak relieved all the soreness in my legs. In any case I am planning on the striders half marathon this weekend.

PM: very good 9. I have no idea why I suddenly feel so good. It must have just been that sore lower right leg. some quad pain, and that left foot pain that is most likely a stress fracture, but overall really good. One mile in 6:20

This race can be summed up in three letters. Meh. It was not my day, and this is due to a number of factors including my 50 miles this week before the race and bad shin splints during the race. My legs never felt good the entire race. My aerobic fitness was okay, but my legs felt bad out there. I ended up running a minute slower than I did last month. I wasn't devastated but based off my time I dont feel like I have the fitness to run a marathon in two weeks. I'm going to push it back and be 100% confident that I am ready. I am sure though on a good day I can run 1:24- 1:25.

Injuries are no fun! I can't believe you ran 11.5 today on a stress fracture! I have had three. I ran eight on the last one and was in pain the whole time. I couldn't put any pressure on my foot for two weeks after that. Decided it was time to go to the orthopedic foot doc again. Hope your foot is just sore! It is hard to stay away from running!

Thankyou so much for the comment. From what your experience was with having a stress fracture, I can infer my foot could very well just be sore from increasing my mileage. I am still able to finish most of my workouts fine. I hope you are healing/ healed too : )

AM: 10 felt good. No sugar in me, i've been losing weight recently. I have not got on a scale to see how much because it's a steady progression right now and I dont want to get mentally messed up. I feel much much better this week. I am learning that I struggle after really hard effort/ record milage weeks like two weeks ago and then perform very well after a taper week. I just look forward to 70-100 mile quality 2 speed workout weeks that will vault me into the best shape imaginable.

I was just so excited to run today. I watched some videos about Lauren Fleshman, she is the best. I got outside and I felt awesome. I'm eating between 2,000-2,500 calories a day and running 10 miles so I dont always have a lot in the tank but my legs feel good.

I found a nice android phone on the sidewalk on my run. I was 5 miles from home so I found these two walkers and asked if they could take it and try and find it's owner, they seemed nice, I hope that person gets their phone back.

Tried 3 loops of what ended up being 7 miles eacg. Felt good for the first two, both were under 8 min pace for 14 miles. I know Sasha suggests that you drop down from slower than marathon pace to pace on these weekend long runs. That would have been nice. Anyways, at about 15 miles I was done. Pace fell to like 10 min per mile or slower and I called it. Unfortunate. I know I am in better shape than I have been in a while but my long distance fitness needs to be evaluated if I am going to have a shot at sub 3. I mean I am in way better shape than when i ran 3:06 and i ran a 1:26 half and I'm just getting stronger so its just a matter of time before a huge breakthrough on 800 1500 3k 5k 10k half and full. big time

 11:30 pm

So I'm just enjoying myself at 7:30 pace when this kid blows past me at like sub 6 pace. I was not to excited about it, so I covered his surge and for all intensive purposes followed/raced him all around town. We never talked and he must have been

A: trying to drop me

B: using that nike plus training deal or

C: throwing in random hard surges

in any case I was on another level than him so I just went until he stopped waved goodbye and went home.
